The core idea

Behaviour is communication.

Understanding it changes everything.

Every behaviour tells a story.

Behind every disruption, refusal, withdrawal or exclusion is a story waiting to be understood. Behaviour is often a form of communication, expressing thoughts and feelings that young people cannot yet put into words. When schools understand what behaviour is communicating, they can intervene earlier, strengthen relationships and create lasting change.

Developed from more than twenty years of frontline therapeutic practice in schools, Beyond The Present equips teachers, SENCOs, pastoral teams and school leaders with the psychological insight to understand what behaviour is communicating. The programme helps staff respond with greater confidence, intervene earlier and build more psychologically informed school communities.

Built on experience.

Created to help more schools.

Schools are under increasing pressure to respond to challenging behaviour while improving attendance, reducing suspensions and supporting pupils with increasingly complex emotional needs.

Over the years, we have worked alongside schools, supporting children, young people and school staff in some of the most challenging educational settings. Supporting pupils at risk of exclusion, alongside those experiencing complex emotional, behavioural and social difficulties, gave us a deep understanding of what helps schools create lasting change. We saw first-hand how psychologically informed practice strengthened staff confidence, transformed relationships, reduced suspensions and exclusions, and improved outcomes for young people facing the greatest challenges.

As we saw the impact this approach was having, we recognised an opportunity to make the same psychological insight and practical strategies available to many more schools.

Beyond The Present was created to do exactly that.

Today, our CPD-accredited programme gives teachers, SENCOs, pastoral teams and school leaders access to the same psychological insight and practical strategies that have shaped our frontline therapeutic work—helping schools intervene earlier, strengthen relationships and build more psychologically informed school communities.

The programme

What changes after staff complete the programme?

Beyond The Present helps staff develop a different way of understanding behaviour. Rather than simply responding to what they see, teachers, pastoral teams and school leaders learn to recognise the emotional meaning behind behaviour, giving them the confidence to intervene earlier, prevent unnecessary escalation and respond with greater consistency. As this understanding grows across the school, relationships become stronger, classrooms become more psychologically informed, and pupils are more likely to feel understood, supported and able to succeed.

1

Understand Behaviour

Staff develop the confidence to recognise the emotional meaning behind behaviour, helping them understand what pupils are communicating rather than simply responding to what they see.

2

Respond Earlier

Teachers, pastoral teams and school leaders learn practical strategies that enable them to intervene earlier, reducing escalation and supporting pupils before difficulties become more entrenched.

3

Build Stronger Relationships

Create psychologically informed classrooms where relationships are strengthened, staff respond with greater confidence and consistency, and pupils feel understood, supported and better able to succeed.

Why Beyond The Present exists…

What schools say

Why school leaders recommend Beyond The Present

“Beyond The Present has transformed the way our staff understand behaviour. It has given our Learning Support Assistants greater confidence, consistency and insight, helping them move beyond managing behaviour to understanding what it is communicating. The programme is engaging, evidence-informed and aligns perfectly with our Behaviour for Learning approach. I would highly recommend it to any school.”

Jacinta Corr
SENCO, St Pius X College

“If your school is preparing for the new statutory expectations around behaviour, inclusion and exclusion, Beyond The Present should be part of that conversation. It has fundamentally changed how our staff understand and respond to behaviour, giving them greater confidence to intervene earlier and support pupils more effectively.”

Andrew Dunne
Headteacher, Newman Catholic College, London

“Since working with Daniel and his team, we’ve significantly reduced suspensions and exclusions. Our staff are now far more confident in understanding behaviour, intervening earlier and building stronger relationships with pupils. Beyond The Present has had a real impact on our school, and I believe every school should have access to the programme.”

Andrew Price
Assistant Headteacher, Islip Manor High School, London
